The Lower Silesian Automotive Cluster (Polish: Dolnośląski Klaster Motoryzacyjny, DKM):
The Lower Silesian Automotive Cluster is a joint project of Legnicka Specjalna Strefa Ekonomiczna S.A., the leading representatives of the automotive industry, Wrocław University of Technology, Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency and of the Ministry of Economy. The letter of intent under which DKM has been established was signed on Friday, 14 November 2014, in Legnica. The leader of the initiative is Legnica Special Economic Zone.
The Lower Silesian Automotive Cluster is the first project of such kind in Lower Silesia; it connects companies and institutions seeking to work on the development of the automotive industry, open to sharing knowledge, experience and to building a strong position in the international arena.
DKM is a consortium involving the constant cooperation of the enterprises with representatives of the scientific institutions and the local government. The very idea of such a cluster focused on automotive industry at the Legnica Special Economic Zone was induced by the fact that the majority of companies operating in the Zone are those with automotive business profile.
The aim of creating the cluster is to increase the innovation capacity of the automotive companies operating in the Legnica Special Economic Zone and in the entire south-west of Poland by providing them with shared access to modern technologies, educational base and support in the transfer of knowledge and experience. The founders of the cluster invite to cooperation all the institutions and companies from outside the LSEZ that wish to operate based on the principle “together we can achieve more”.
Forming clusters, in addition to the exchange of knowledge, usually brings a wide range of conveniences, including generating and implementing new technological or organisational solutions. It opens up new possibilities, such as joint purchases resulting in a lower cost (e.g. purchase of energy at a lower, more favourable price) and the possibility of obtaining assistance for the development of innovative projects (EU grants).
For Lower Silesia the development of clusters means raising the level of innovation in the province, increasing the number of businesses in Lower Silesia, improvement of corporate development conditions, strengthening cooperation between the companies that invest in the region. It also means the implementation of province development program objectives for the coming years, i.e. the Regional Development Strategy for the Lower Silesia Province until 2020 and the Regional Innovation Strategy for Lower Silesia for the years 2011-2020.
